Hokkaido, located in northern Japan, is the third best pacific salmons fishery in the World after Alaska and eastern Russia but the only the only place where you could find one of the rarest and most-valued species of Taimen: the Japanese Taimen (ITO).
The ITO, as the natives call the Japanese Taimen can only be found in Hokkaido Island. A unique species, which you will only be able to catch in a couple of Japanese rivers and only during the months of June, September and October.
One of the peculiarities of this species is that some specimens reside permanently in the river, as happens in Mongolia with their Taimens. While others are anadromous: they live in the sea and only return to the river once they reach maturity before spawning time.
Besides the precious Taimen, there are other native salmon species that inhabit the Hokkaido’s waters, such as Yamame or Iwana, which you only will find in here, in Japan, as well as the rainbow and brown trout.
